How Coaching Works

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM COACHING?

You can expect for us to develop a collaborative relationship. I offer you a safe, special space where you can assess, with honesty, where you are in achieving your life’s goals. I often hear from my coachees that feel like they have been heard for one of the first times in their life!

You will clarify or create new goals and may discover hidden patterns that you would like to change. By your side I will support you in a thought-provoking way to discover how to be your best you. The outcome of each coaching session will be a collaboratively created action plan that you will work on between sessions. Through our time together, you will hone your own long-term problem solving skills.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

The very first step is to schedule your complimentary sample session. During this session, you will be able to ask any questions you might have about coaching and decide whether coaching is for you. If Yes, your next step will be to schedule your Discovery Session, which is a 60 minute coaching session conducted either on the phone or on zoom.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COACHING AND THERAPY?

Coaching is not psychological counseling or psychotherapy, nor is it intended as a replacement. While there are some similarities between coaching and therapy, namely the safe space for exploration, coaching is future looking and both action-oriented and outcome-focused. Therapy tends to be backward looking and focused on issue identification and resolution.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COACHING AND CONSULTING?

Coaching is not teaching or training. When coaching I help you through a process of discovery by using active listening skills, asking powerful questions, expanding thought processes, identifying limited beliefs, designing action steps, and following up.

Here are some coaching attributes:

  • Coaches do not talk, they listen.

  • Coaches do not give information, they ask questions.

  • Coaches do not offer ideas, they generate ideas from clients.

  • Coaches do not present solutions, they expand the client’s thinking.

  • Coaches do not give recommendations, they empower clients to choose.

Consulting is about sharing expertise, identifying and solving problems, and building solutions. When consulting I delve into your business issues to help you diagnose problems and propose solutions. Sometimes a client does not have the resources, skills, or availability to devote to or simply desire a fresh set of eyes to solve their business problems.

Here are some consulting attributes:

  • Consultants ask questions, and help clients to clearly and fully articulate business needs.

  • Consultants identify gaps, and propose ways to close them.

  • Consultants offer ideas while tapping into the client’s experience and expertise.

  • Consultants offer possible solutions that may be outside of the client’s current thinking or area of expertise.

  • Consultants offer a fresh perspective to business problems, and empower their clients to choose the best one for them.

HOW LONG ARE THE COACHING SESSIONS?

The Discovery Session is 50 minutes long. After that, we will decide how often and for how long we will meet. This is based on the topics you would like to explore and move forward in your life, as well as your availability and budget. Sessions are typically scheduled for 50 minutes with a bi-weekly interval. This interval is flexible, however, sufficient time must exist between sessions for you to make progress on your action plan.

Sessions can be in 30 minute increments to support both your schedule and your budget.

Longer, intensive sessions are available. Please contact me if you are interested in pursuing this option.

IS THERE A MINIMUM TIME I NEED TO COMMIT?

No, there is no minimum time commitment. Our coaching relationship will continue as long as there is a benefit to you. The time you will need will vary based on topic(s). Often clients, upon achieving the goal that brought them to coaching in the first place, will want to explore and move forward other topics. Through our time together, you will hone your own long-term problem solving skills.
